I love this plant Baa, even if it does seed itself all over the garden. It looks great with just about anything else. Tasty too.
Lovely photo :)

Thanks Philomel :)

Very little actually self sows in the garden, especially in the 'Witches Garden' as my Brother calls it. It's really the herb patch but it's so overgrown with vigorous plants you never know what you may find in there. A Mandrake, which hasn't been seen for 2 years, has re-appeared from the rootstock which was a bit of a suprise.

The fennel is never eaten but we leave it for the nectar seekers which swarm around the whole plant as soon as it flowers.

I just use a little of the ferny new growth sprinkled onto fish or in salads - i chop it up with scissors and use it raw. That's if i haven't eaten it already on the way back to the kitchen LOL.

Yes, the hoverflies in particular seem to dote on it! I always have loads left for them, and the flowers are quite attractive too.

baa - mandrake, isn't that supposed to scream when you pull up the root?

as for the fennel, i have some of this too, but it doesn't seem to be as pink as that, its more browny, am i doing something wrong?

Philomel

I read that chewing the seeds freshens breath too. Not tried that one I'm not too keen on fennel! I'm glad someone is though.

Lil

Yep supposedly, but I'm a bit deaf and a bit daft so I didn't notice it yelling ;)

Browny sounds fine to me, it's probably just a difference in the form or it could be the soil trace elements. Either way as long as its got new growth on it, it's doing fine :) (Baa's garden philosophy for the day)

I often have fennel tea in the morning Baa. Will have to open up a bag and try your tip. Parsley works quite well too so i'm told.
