Cogongrass, Cogon Grass, Satintail, Japanese Blood Grass 'Rubra'
Imperata cylindrica
Additional info: (aka Red Baron)

Blooms of the bloodgrass. They aren't all that attractive...but of course this plant isn't grown for it's blooms.

That's a pretty grass; I always mean to get some. I wonder if this is the red grass I see in big patches in fields around here. Think it could have re-seeded and started naturalizing, or is it a wild weedy grass?

I think you're seeing some sort of native grass. This grass I have have pictured spreads very well from creeping rhizomes, but I haven't seen anything come up from seed yet. I doubt this would do very well in competition with native grasses in a field. This grass is only about 2 ft tall at the most.

As far as I know, the seeds of this variety are sterile. :(

You really don't need seeds with this stuff...it spreads fast...maybe too fast. Even in heavy/thick clay.
