This is a beautiful shrub! I have a lilac that I bought 2 years ago and it has only grown 1 foot in all that time. I don't remember what the name of it is, but my question is how long does it take a lilac to get to the size of your beauty? I have heard it can take up to 5 years to bloom??? Awww crud! I'm an instant gratification kind of girl...funny I should pick gardening as a hobby with all it's 'plant this year for next year's bloom' stuff. LOL Anyway, I will be patient and know that some things I planted two years ago will do very well this year!
This lilac came with our house... and we've been here 11 years now. I'm sure it was probably here 20 years before that. To be honest - if I could get rid of it I would! It throws suckers like wouldn't believe. It just wants to spread and spread. I have a very hard time keeping it out of my gardens.
Oh PS, take a long drink of that fragrance for me--I love it so! Growing one here in Ga but its so confused it blooms at the ends of the branchs 2 or 3 times per year! There is supposed to be a trick for those suckers--ask another Yankee!
i have one and we literally trim it like you would a tree every year...we wait till a month or 2 after its done blooming and trim it all up, it looks like a tree and people hae stopped to ask what tree it is, when in bloom all the blooms rush to the top of the "tree" now and is loaded, 3 times as many blooms as before, and the scent is devine...the one we have has been with this house since the family has owned the house, back in the 70's, so figure that age out :) i will post a pic for you if i can find one of it. This is Sept 2003 after a haircut...its the tree next to the shed.
