They are only perennial where very happy but they will behave as an annual or biennial too and flower their heads off.
Little monsters are annuals for me but then I'm on neutral-acid clay and they prefer alkaline, well drained soils. One of our native wildflowers which look wonderful on the south downs in the north of this county and right through the north of Sussex.
i think my soil is midly alkaline and is quite free draining, must be why they like it. i only bought this in may, and it's gone mad in the last month or so.. Baa - i'm keeping the spent heads on the plant for seed for the RR ;D
