Seen many of these odd things at the side of the road. It's a single stem about 1 inch round, 4 feet tall with large thorns and new leaves coming out from the very top of the 'stick'. Any ideas?

Patty, I think you are right. I was saying exactly that to DH. But I have never seen them sprouting from just one cane. I did grow a honey locust and it had numerous branches - you know, like any tree. Robinia we called it. Maybe this is another version of it. Thanks, I will keep watching them and let you know.

Louisa, it sounds like the Devils' club. It's an aralia.

Oh my Ivey, it could very well be. And to think we covet this back home. Thanks!
