Here's a report on several odd things I've noticed this season and I'm hoping that several of you have similar experiences this season...or not ,as the case may be.
First of all,my indet. plants are not as tall as in other years.I blame this on the late start my transplants got.The seed were set on Feb.14 and another group 2 weeks later.Needless to say,by the time they were planted in the garden around the 8th of June, they were sadly overgrown and stressed.I had to trench them in and had been pinching blooms for some weeks to prevent fruit set.My tallest plants are Uncle Mark Bagby (local heirloom) and Old Flame (a long season bi-color)They measure at about 4 foot on the average. Everything else is smaller,to much smaller. My Arkansas Travelers are about 2 1/2 feet tall and look like a patio tomato! The Tatar From Mongolstan is smaller than that, but not knowing about it's habits,I'm not sure what is considered normal. It's been blistering hot almost since they were put in the ground, but I've faithfully watered. It seems curious,as in years past,my tomatoes usually outgrew the fences I trellised them on.
On the good side of things,I've got almost no tomato foliage problems. My leaves have no yellowing, spots or blight, and usually by now most have 'burned up'.Except for a little leaf curl, everything is green and healthy...really odd for West KY at the end of July, but I'll take it!Aphids haven't even been a problem this season.
Fruit set is on the light side, but I blame that on the temps.I'm concerned with the German Red Strawberry.Out of 8 plants,I have 2 tomatoes! And they are both on the same plant.Others are pretty much as expected.Arkansas Traveler is hanging full.Uncle Mark has as nice fruit as I've ever seen. The Rose Beauty have some of the lovliest 1/2 pound green tomatoes that you can ask for...they look like a candidate for hot summers.Light fruit set on Winsall and Ferris Wheel is dissapointing, but the plants look healthy,so I'm hoping for better luck when the temps moderate.
I've had quite a few deformed blossoms on the German Red Strawberry.I've never seen any information to say that this variety is prone to them, but all of my plants have had several. This may be why my fruit set is sparse,it's just odd because there are plenty of normal ones too.
My harvest looks like it will start in about 10 days and I'm anxious to try all of these new varieties.I did get a very small Aunt Ruby's German Green and an Abe Hall today,so it will be tomatoes pretty soon...I just feel that I've had to wait far too long.
Owen mentioned some sort of insect that bored into his stems in another post...I've not had this, but would be curious if someone else has had them.
What has everybody else been seeing this year? It's been such a weird season all over,I'd like to hear about anything abnormal.
