As you can see, I've only been here three months and as yet am far from fluent...
A bientot

| thanks philomel, this is a lovely site..am trying to acquaint myself with the members and it is so lovely getting to know you all.
I was interested in the tropical hibiscus as this is what I grow...I had to give up on a lot of my English style flowers and plants as they do not grow too well here [ in fact fare miserably] I still do grow a lot of roses, so am happy about that.[ also the dry European style plants and Australian]. Because we can grow semi tropical/tropical I changed to the tropical plants, flowers and fruit trees [ am a member of Rare Fruit Growers] with many banana plants, gingers, plumerias.passion flowers/fruit ...fruit trees like Sapote, Cherimoya, Mango, Papaya, Lychee etc., my style of cooking has changed too as I now cook with a lot of the tropical fruits and veggies. I have always loved cooking so my family very happy...smile...I think I could settle just about anywhere with a good garden. I have not attempted to send any pictures yet, I will have to find out how to do it [ I am NOT profficient on a computor at all] One of the reasons for web/tv which nobody really understands outside of the USA is because of medical reasons I cannot use our computor, however, my son [who is a doll] is helping me get started with a new lap-top I am just hoping I do not have the same reactions to it otherwise I can see myself having to wear face mask [hope not ha] How did you finish up in France ? it sounds lovely where you are, and yes, I am a fanatic about views and lovely scenery too, I go into raptures [ can never understand why people do not share our passion too ?] regards, marion |

| Thank you Kell, it is fun cooking with the tropical fruits, and so very interesting unless you have book like''Know and Enjoy Tropical Fruit'' by James J Darley, wonderful recipes and photographs and fruit facts, but all in grams and mls and the rest, so have to get my brain sorted before I can try the recipes, lovely book tho [ Australian] I have always loved to experiment with food too and try things a little differently [ and combining]...a tropical fruit salad with a mango vinegarette [ or passion fruit..sapote etc] chutneys, makes for a nice change to barbeues especially [ and there are so many tropicals and semi'tropicals starting with pineapple and mangoes which are plentiful here]...I have gone on to a lot of other Tropical Fruit Cookbooks, [deserts too, sorbets etc.,] but I do try not to use much sugar if possible, you can let your imagination go wild, even with the barbeque sauce...[ I try new recipes out on my boys, and all I hear is when the next barbeque will be]..fun tho.. Are you able to grow the tropicals Kell? will have to find out where you are, yes, it is a lot of fun but I also love growing tropical plants and flowers too, some are very unusual and may not take our frost when it comes along, but thats o'k, we would never do anything if we did not make the effort and I was told years ago that grapefruit would not grow in the foothills where we live...we had grapefruit for 30 yrs, and trees overloaded with fruit...so never say never...thanks again for your welcome...am still finding my way around the different forums...marion |

| Wow you sound so adventurous with all those tropicals. It must be great.
Although it's much warmer here than in Kent, we still get some sharp frosts in the winter apparently, so tender things still have to go indoors :(
Your grapefruit story is inspiring. The guy who was here before us grew citrus fruits in pots and put them just inside an opensided building in the winter. We also have a couple of olive trees.
One fruit I'd absolutely love to be able to grow is the mango
I think I put the instructions for pic posting in another thread Marion, but in case not I'll copy it to here. It may hopefully help your doll of a son to get you started. Can't wait to see your photos :oD

| THANKS SO MUCH PHILOMEL you have been so helpful and patient with me...I am just now recovering from oral surgery and some exploratory surgery, so my face and jaw is all stitched up and very painful...needless to say this has really set me back a lot...the boys are coming down here for Labour [ or Labor] Day weekend this weekend, had a lot planned but had to cancel the barbeque this time ...mum is just not up to it, so dad is taking them out to eat [ I do feel sorry about it but cannot be helped]...At least I will get to see them...Our weather continues hot right thru 'til November so still plenty of time for barbeques, and Christmas Day is almost like being in an oven sometimes with the heat...however, after all these years you learn to cope. Hope you are still enjoying your lovely views, and all the beauty of nature around you, also hope your mom is doing well and getting acquainted with all the new things in her life now..It looks lovely where you are..do you get much rain...we need it badly over here where we are..reclaimed desert really..
Have fun, I so enjoy your postings and pictures, marion |

| Do hope you recover from all of that soon - sounds very painful!
We've had quite a lot of rain this summer - the locals say much more than usual. It's still hot. They say it's possible to eat out into November and even later sometimes. I look forward to that - particularly knowing that a snow fix in the Pyrenees is only a drive away :)
Please look after yourself and get well soon |

| Oh Marion. I hope you heal quickly! Glad you at least are getting to see your boys. My 1 boy moved to NY last month and I miss him so much. He has always been close by, even for college! Maybe if I coudl cook like you, he would not have been so eager toleave! LOL
Homemade mango sorbet sounds too good to be true!
I live in the Bay Area, California so my zone is 9A or 9B. I can never decide! Why wouldn't grapefruit grow in zone 10? I had a huge tree for years here until I wanted the room for something else. We also have a lemon tree and a mandarin lime. No real tropical fruit trees though. A peach and an apple.
Now that Philomel has shared with you the secrets of posting pics, you best get busy! LOL You made me laugh saying your boy would help you. My kid was a computer major at Stanford and I would always ask him to help me with my computer problems. Oddly , he never seemed to have a clue how to fix whatever it was. I would get so upset that I was wasting all that tuition money! |

| Half way thru junior year and a few credits away from his computer science degree he decided he did not want to do that type of work. We were dismayed. We thought OH GREAT, $150,000 later he now tells us!!
Because he was so close to having enough credits, we told him to stick it out for you never know when a degree in engineering from Stanford would come in handy in life. So the kid did but decided to double major and in 1 1/2 years took enough classes to also graduate with a B.A. in Political Science. He has just moved to NY in August and is in his 1st year of law at Columbia. He is thrilled and loves it and loves NY! I sure hopes he finds something he loves getting up to do every morning! |

| Do not feel too bad Kell, our oldest who has worked for the past 20 years in the field of biology and chemistry [really worked very hard on those degrees] finally decided this year to chuck it all in and is working as a personal fitness trainer [ his passion] it is not paying much and they are having a little struggle right now, but he is so happy...and we are too [ well his dad couldn't see the sense giving up so much] however, you know as long as they are happy at what they are doing..the joke had been for years that my hubby could have retired a millionaire, but we have the best [really wonderful] relationship with our two boys so it has all been worth it..Just support your son and love him and you will find he wants to come home and visit whenever he can...you dont need anything special..if he likes pizza, then order some in or take him out to eat at a favourite restaurant... Our boys did make it for the holiday weekend..but I am almost on my knees [ I SLEPT this afternoon for a good 2 hours and I still feel exhausted...] but who is complaining I did what I could and I just love having them here [ I can collapse later]...I will do it for as long as I can, that is just the way I feel...
I know you have the most wonderful views of the snow capped mountains Philomel, here, we can drive about 20 mins [ freeway] into the mountains but do not have the mountain views unless we are travelling up the freeways or east...It is always such a thrill to see the snow covered mountains in the distance...[ We do not visit the mountains anymore because unfortunately people go a little wild here with snow mobiles and trying to hit as many people and cars as possible with snowballs]...its a great shame that it brings out the worst in some people but the snow seems to do this [ some of them arrive in shorts and sneakers from the beach ]...bizarre !!!!! hmmmn |

| It's such a blessing in life if you can find something to work at tha you really enjoy. Worth some hardships along the way
That's such a shame about the snowy mountains being a no go area for you :(
We haven't experienced the winter here yet. I do hope it's not like that.
Why do some people have to be so selfish and spoil something that could be enjoyed by all in different ways? Ggrrrr
Thoughtless and no imaginations!! |
