In the PDB, we recently added several hundred varieties of corn (which bear the common names of Dent, Flint, Flour, Sweet or Popcorn to designate their class.) All of them were listed botanically as Zea mays - because I thought that was correct.

Some nosing around today made me realize that there are subspecies or varietal names that differentiate these classes:

Dent corn - Zea mays indentata
Flint corn - Zea mays indurata
Flour corn - Zea mays amylacae
Popcorn - Zea mays everta
Sweet Corn - Zea mays saccharata

Here's my question. Before I start the task of correcting these entries (or begging Dave to do some programming magic to automate the changes), I'm not 100% certain that these names as listed are correct.

Taking the first one for example, different sources might show the name as:

Zea indentata, synonym Zea mays indentata
-Or-
Zea mays var. indentata
-Or-
Zea mays subsp. indentata

(Not all species are shown in all of these ways, but this is indicative of what I'm finding out there. Can anyone help clear up how each of these should be listed in order to reflect their correct botanical names? Thanks in advance...
