(1) no one has so far succeeded to grow dracs from seed successfully. (Run a search in DG for "dracunculus" and see previous dicussions). Someone proposed that the seeds are viable only when fresh, and to my eyes, they don't look like seeds, but rather like baby bulbs so they dry out very fast after maturing. I even wondered if normally they are eaten by birds, and excreted in a day - in which case, to simulate the conditions we will need fresh chicken droppings to plant them in (very advanced gardening this is...)
(2) the ASDA used to irradiate all seeds (incoming rattling letter envelopes) to avoid importation of plant diseases from othe countries (search for "irradiation" s well. There was a lot written about a year ago).
As I am awfully busy, being a doctor, I don't post too often in DG although I would like it very much. So, if you want me to send you fresh seeds in late Spring when they are ready, let me know by email via DG. I already have some from last year, but I don't see them very eager to germinate. Let me know anyway.
Dear,
Don't try with the seeds.
Those seeds have first pas true a birds stomac (acid) to become to germination. The only thing you could try is take a FRESH SEED and let it dropped in a mixture of citric acid for about 3 houres. Take it out wash with clear water and let them dry for a couple of houres.
Put them on well watered substrat and cover with fine grit.
Bring temp upto (at least during daytime) 28°C. Have much patiens and hope or pray.
I know them from the Canary Islands there we have the Dracunculus canariense with a flower spat of about 25cm long. I tryed diff times to saw, but never I ahd luck, finely I was oblidged to take an ognion and now I have different of them in my greenhouse.
Greetings,
Albert
I was afraid of something like that. This means that the hundreds of seeds I can easily collect when the berries ripen are practically of no use to mail to anyone.
Similarly, the seeds of passiflora caerulea need to be soaked in orange juice, perhaps for the same reason.
I ordered this plant and received a large tuber to plant. I have planted it, but it will not bloom until next spring. I have also readthat they get 3ft. tall before they bloom. They also smell like rotten meat in order to lure flies and other insects to pollinate them. I was told that the bad smell only last for one day. I sure hope so!
