PJ, what a neat swing/pergola! I only raised moonflowers once, when I was 17 and still at home with my parents. They didn't have a clue about gardening so I started there. Will moonflower take some shade? How much?
woodspirit... Mine is in partial (fairly light) shade all summer, it just doesn't get flowers on the sides, but profusely near and on the top. Won't hurt to try them at your place! I'll bring you some seeds next time I see you, but you may have to remind me, LOL.
Thank you all for your positive comments about this photo of my moonvine and swing arbor. Aotearoa: it really is a peaceful spot. Especially on those late summer/early autumn evenings. During this plant's "peak," I had between 85-100 moonflowers each evening. They only live for one evening, then drop off the next morning. The light scent is divine, the vine is prolific. This photo was taken in July. We had frost in middle Georgia last night, so I'm sure it will be gone soon. I'm going to remove it from the arbor, I have Carolina Jasmine underneath - it's evergreen. I put 3 moonvine plants on each side of this arbor - and they went crazy!!! Right now I have hundreds of seeds. I started the seeds in February (bought the packet at K-Mart last winter), then set out the little seedlings in April. I had flowers in late June and the show started every evening around 8:30 or 9:00. I've had so much fun with this plant - can't wait until next year. It really was a perfect spot for it.

Your arbor and swing look soooo inviting. I am trying for this effect myself. I'm on a lake and would love to sit and swing by the lake. Where can I find an arbor / swing like that? Or, do I have to build it? Please tell me the secret. Please, please...pretty please?????? :-)
I've grown Moonflowers from saved seed every year for about five years, and I thought I did quite well with them until I saw this picture. This is just beautiful and shows what can be done with a quick growing vine. You may find that they will reseed in Middle Georiga. I too bought my first seeds in Macon, grew them the first year in a pot, saved the seeds, and planted started seedlings in the ground in Newnan, a suburb of Atlanta, where they proceeded to come up every year around the mailbox in a not very protedted spot. I also grew them up a newel post on the front porch, and in pots, just to make sure I had enough to save seed for the next year.
