This is a small plant not more than 2 feet tall, small, peach-orange 2-3 cm. flowers (one bud is seen in the pic, and a couple of seeds too). I wonder if this belongs to the hibiscus family. Anyone know what exactly this is?

I had thought that this plant is a short one, as told by my old-lady-friend who gave me its seeds. Now when I look at the stem, it looks like a hibiscus stem, and woody. The seeds of it are tiny and have very thin white hairs all round it, somewhat resembling the seeds of Confederate rose.

Here are its seeds. I am missing out the flower for posting here. The seeds mature pretty quickly... in about 7-10 days after the flower is gone.

It certainly gives the impression of Malvaceae Dinu. I'm afraid that without the flowers I'm worse than useless on most shrubs. With the flowers the colour you say they are, could it be Abutilon?

The flower is very nearly like this http://academic.reed.edu/biology/courses/BIO332/slideshow/pa... but there is no gap between the petals. The colour is very very close to mine.

Aaah, here is the *elusive* flower. This fellow closes by afternoon. There was just this one today and I did not forget to pluck it off for scanning since I could not get hold of my friend's digi-cam. Hope this plant will now be identified.

This is the underside of the flower. It is about 1 and a quarter inch across.

Yes, Evert, seeds are available and I collected a few. In fact, the Nyctanthes seeds are ready too and by sheer coincidence, I have it ready in the envelope for you and now I will add seeds of these too. Will mail it this afternoon.

    But which is this plant??

    Thanks!

I don't know, I am pretty sure it belongs to Malvaceae, looks a bit like some Abutilon, but there are so many other species too, so can't be sure.

Here is what it is -- http://www.meden.demon.co.uk/Malvaceae/Hibiscus/galleryB.htm... I contacted that person, Mr.Stewart Robert Hinsley, who owns that collection. He also opines that it is closest to the h.hirtus. I had given a link to this thread as well. He sent me some literature and I am convinced that it is hibiscus hirtus.
