I have one of those I am nursing back to health. I've been pinching it back and putting the pinchings in the soil around the base of the plant to root. It's getting nice and full now. :) Have you seen them bloom? I never had until mine did this year. I keep hoping to time things right so I can get a photo of a bloom when the bloom's still fresh!

I found a wholesaler's web page that said these plants are notorious for becoming spindly, and that the wholesaler manipulated just about everything to get the plants to the market in a compact size. They emphasised that the retailer should not fertilize the plants.

They didn't say what the end user should do. I felt it was implied. When the plant gets ugly, buy new ones. Makes the plant a cow -- a cash cow.

I like the idea of taking cuttings to fill out the original plant. I'll try it. My plants have never tasted fertilizer and are still leggy, but the color is a good color highlight. Knowing the limitations, I might buy it again, as an accent plant, but never the center of attention.

I can definitely see the legginess! This is what mine looks like right now, after being pinched back and having the pinched pieces stuck back in the soil. It has a long ways to go, but it's coming along nicely. I really need to transplant it into a pot with a better potting mix in it. With every time I've tamped the soil down around a new cutting, the soil level's really gone down, too!

The tallest one in there is about 4" tall. It's funny how some of the leaves are very bright and colorful, while others have little spotting.
