I am very interested in Bitterroot, trying to create and conserve a native plant garden here in BC. I am unable to download your photo, but wonder if you could tell me where and when you took it. I used to live in Kelowna. Bitteroot was a staple diet of the Okanagan Indians. Do you have any? seed? or?

I live in Australia, so do not have any access to the plant. I spent a year in Kelowna in BC, from July 1997 to June 1998 and in that time I photographed a great many of the wild flowers of the area. My photographs of Bitterroot, were taken on the top of Knox Mountain, very near to the lookout which overlooks Kelowna and Lake Okanagan.
If you do ever locate seed of Bitterroot, I would love the opporunity to try growing them here in Australia.
I expect that locating seed is tricky, because the leaves wither before the flowers appear and by the time the flowers are over and the seed is set, there will not be much that looks like a plant left to see. I would think you would need to locate the plants when in flower and note their exact position, returning some time later to look for seed.
I live in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana and grow bitterroots in flower beds and also have them growing in the wild on our land.
I do not know if Dave has seeds, but I have about a pound and a half of them. The only problem with growing the bitterroots from seeds is that you need to know how to plant them,how to recognize the sprouts, and also how to take care of them during this period of time. Once the plants are established they do very well on their own.
