I am not very familiar with this plant, having only met it during a year I spent in Canada.
I had a search on the internet and failed to find any reference to its being poisonous, so I don't think it is considered a serious danger.
I did find the statement:
Quoted:
Japanese Butterbur can become a hard to control
weed.
so you might consider that a good reason not to plant it.
