I need your help! Through the years I have lived in Hawaii and Seattle and have always been able to keep a ponytail healthy indoors with filtered light. I used to water it once a week, but not soak it so the H2O ran through.
No other plant gives me as much joy but I have moved to AZ and have had no luck with my favorite plane! 2 of them have died in my home. I received one as a gift yesterday and don't want to repeat my mistakes! I have a soft water system (Rainsoft) throughout my home and windows that have a film that supposedly keep out 95% of the sun.
With the last one I watered it thoroughly once a month as I had read on a website. Within about 3 months the top (still green) just tipped over, the bulb still in tact. It looked brown at the base of the leaves and water logged although the bulb appeared firm, but not hard. Too little water? Too much? Should I use the water from the outside faucet that is not part of the Rainsoft system?
Should I bring it outside for the AM sun and bring it in about 10 or 11AM? From the pictures it looks like the plant can stand the outdoors although I have never lived in such harsh sun prior to AZ.
Hi,
I have a few questions about this "bottle palm." First of all, we have this plant for more than 10yrs now and we love it. We live in Los Angeles. Early this week we decided to transplant this plant to the backyard (hillside) in a corner of the terraced space made for a seating area bordered with railroad ties. It looked beautiful there, however, we are concerned about the future, will this tree uproot the railroad ties and cause the terraced area to collapse when it grows bigger? And how much bigger can it grow? Do we have to replant it back to the terra cota vessel? This looks like a really good website where people are very knowledgeable about plants. I am very pleased I ran across it. Please email me back with a good advice at jmgarevalo@yahoo.com
Thank you, jmgarevalo@yahoo.com
