Really good closeup, altho sideways :-)
I counted 44 flowers and 85 of these plants on a shady hillside with mostly pine, some deciduous trees 4 years ago but population this year is down around 50. A Black Leaf condition seems to be responsible, mold/mildew. I've received mixed opinons on how to treat it, or not treat it. Pink lady slipper is known to be more fragile than others. The flowers can be manually pollinated. Seeds need fungus in the soil to become viable.
