Your the palm expert PalmBob. So I was wondering...How can you tell the difference from this Lutescens w/ floppy leaves and the D. Onilahensis weeping form? They look the same to me.
D onilahensis has a lot more powder on the trunk, less stems, more spaces between the leaflets, thicker leaves, is a larger tree overall, and has different flowers (the ultimate difference). Otherwise they do look superficially the same... this tree was one of many bizzarre variations from D lutescens parents, and possibly there is some D onilahensis in the gene pool... they are redoing the Dypsis again soon, and D onilahensis may end up being lumped in with a lot of other popular species, too... like D baronii for example... and possible even D lutescens (guess even floral differences can be variable and require one to include very different individuals in the same species).
Thanks Bob. Hey, I noticed several pictures taken by you of Dean Ouer's garden in Encinitas, CA. Do you know Dean? He's my Uncle-in-law, I guess you'd call it...and he's inspired me in my palm cultivation. Thanks for all the great pics and posts.-Matty B
Hi. I'm new to Dave's Garden. Is the photograph of the palm I have here a Golden Cane Palm? It was taken in Hawaii, and we are seeking out this palm to plant in our Ventura County, California garden. Any idea where we can obtain one?
That certainly is one... however, it will not look exactly like that in California... Ventura county is a pretty decent climate for those as long as it's near the coast... inland, not always so. You can find that palm in just about any Home Depot or Lowes. Also often at Savons. It is one of the most commonly sold palms in southern California, usually in the indoor foliage sections.
