Common Staghorn Fern, Elkhorn Fern, Antelope Ears
Platycerium bifurcatum

Here\\\'s one permanently afixed to a palm trunk. All you have to do is tie them there for a few years and their roots will grow in and take over.

Wow, I have never seen a staghorn fern that huge. It is stunning. Any idea how much it weighs?

No but I have a friend with much larger ones than that, that weigh over 100 lbs... had to be mounted on his trees with a little Bobcat crane attachment. I know they can weigh hundreds of pounds.

Palmbob, I' m in Fernandina Beach, Florida and love looking at the photos you have on this site. Is there anything you can't grow--and grow well? I have 2 staghorns--one is a pup I was given from a lady friend in Venice, Fl. The "mother" hangs from a tree by 5 extremely large chains and took 5 men to hang it! This one is hanging on (almost lost it last winter--in my patio/greenhouse--but it came back and is growing slowly). The other I bought at Lowe's in a 4 in pot last January--it's in a very large pot that hangs outside and is growing in leaps and bounds--just not sure how to handle it now that it's so big and outgrowing its pot. I have huge oak trees on my property, but limbs are too high. Any suggestions?

Get someone to mount it for you on your oak trees, either in a 'Y' of two branches, or make a home for it one the trunk
