Above is the hyperlink to the other thread where we were discussing this corn.

Well,my Uncle Joe remembers Hickory King. He's not sure about it's actual use in the Corn Beer, but remembers having grown it for Hominy. Stands to reason, they probably used it for that too.

Some of you mentioned that it was still commercially available,so on a whim,I called our farm store.I asked to speak with whoever took care of the seed dept, and a lady came on the phone.I asked if she'd ever heard of it,and she told me that they'd carried Hickory King for as long as anyone can remember there. In fact, they still have some of the white in 1/2 pound packages...at half price.

They'll have fresh this Spring,in both colors, but I wonder about putting some in my deep freeze just the way it is now. If it's not treated, why can't I make parched corn out of it??

The lady also made sure to add...'now honey, this is an Open Pollinated' corn do you understand what that is'?? I told her I had a pretty good idea, and let it slide.

Does anyone out there want a 1/2 pound pack? She said there were 9 left. We can also wait till next spring and get fresh seed too.

I started a thread a couple of years ago looking for corn that my ancestors grew.I just tried to go too far back in time.I was curious about the years around the Revolution, and we didn't have much to go on.Finding the Hickory King right here in my backyard kind of makes up for it.I've got proof from relatives that our family used the corn...so what if I've got to buy it commercially? It still is a link with my history, and that's the main reason I do this.
