Hi, house_vixen. Fireweed is a real 'weed' around here in South Central Alaska, but it looks pretty happy in the Pacific Northwest, too.

House_vixen, that grows wild around here too & seems to be very invasive. Would you believe I never knew what it was called. Thanks for posting the photo.

Hi house_vixen, Rosebay willow herb is a weed and invasive on this side of the Atlantic, (Plymouth, UK), but is always impressive when seen in flower in woodland clearings and waste ground.

Fireweed is so-named because it grows in disturbed areas, such as wooded areas that have been cleared by forest fires. In fact, heat is required (or preferred) to stratify the seeds for germination.

It is considered a weed here, as well, but a beautiful one. I pull it out of my flower beds, but I leave it along the perimeters of our property. It is also quite beautiful along roadsides and growing along the mountainsides.

I recently acquired some white fireweed. It occurs occasionally in nature, and this was from a patch someone had cultivated next to their house.
