English Ivy, Common Ivy
Hedera helix

This area used to grow nothing, so poor and compacted is the soil. English Ivy thrives here, with absolutely no care except clipping the edges.

Now that is what I want to achive in my shady side yard. How long did it take you to get that area to look like that. Do you cut it back? That is beautiful.

I am glad you like it...I get a lot of compliments on it from visitors and the evergreen patch is very welcome during the deciduous times here.
The planting started with only 3 rooted cuttings (nearby) that spread over a huge area and into the woods. I used to mow this section (it barely grew anything due to shade and poor, compacted soil) and as the ivy grew into the area, I continued to mow for the first couple of years. This probably spurred more growth. I can't tell you exactly how long it took, but I started it about 10 -12 years ago. Of course, it has spread much further than this photo shows. I keep the edges clipped that are towards our home, but like I said earlier, it has advanced far into the woods on other edges and this is not really all that desirable since it smothers all else. So please be prepared to establish firm boundaries for it and faithfully prune it back each June and September. You can mow it in the spring once every few years to sort of rejuvenate it.
