Is this the grass that I saw so much used in commercial landscape borders in California and parts west? It looks real lovely where you have it planted.

Perhaps, but I doubt any city with a half-way smart head of city planning would allow it. :-) The image from the PDB is just some stragglers that were allowed to live there as long as they behave (which they won't).

Here is a cut and paste of some notes I've added to the PDB record:
Good pond or bog plant or in a situation where it can be contained. It can be VERY invasive if let loose. Spreads by underground "bulblets"/rhyzomes and will crowd out most everything within 2 seasons in 9b. The underground runners and growth reminds me of a pot bound asparagus fern or spider plant, tough as nails!

Dies back in the winter and rests up for being a thug in the Spring. I pull "all" of it and dig some so that each year I end up with just a reasonable amount around the pond. Moneywort gives it a run for its "money" in the thug department and the two seem to be able to live in harmony together.

The image attached shows what came back after I thinned it around the pond edge last fall. It will also grow in a pond which is a good way to contain it.

Wow! That's a lot that came back considering you pulled it out! I had to laugh at your description of this plant as a "thug!" Very colorful! I guess then it probably isn't what I have seen growing around businesses. Thanks!
