The "banana's" on this plant are plastic. I put them on it to fool some friends from Hawaii. Was told if the stalk didn't freeze that it would bloom and bare uneatable fruit. That hasn't happened and I haven't had it freeze back now for several years. But it is still work the effort just of the dramatic foliage.
