i've just joined. could you please bring me up to speed here? what does PDB stand for? and what does this 'thread' consist of besides the photo?
i'm interested in palms in general and particularly those that can be grown in temperate climates such as yours.
by the way, how do you know that you're in zone 10a as opposed to 9b?
Alwyn,
PDB simply stands for Plants Data Base, the database within the Dave's Garden website.
This thread is simply comments on the particular photo. Such threads are usually fairly short and most photos do not generate any comment at all.
If you become a subscriber to Dave's Garden, you then get access to a large number of forums, discussing everything you can think of relating to plants and gardening.
As to the zone I am in it is rather guess work for me, it is based on this table
USDA Zone 9a (-3.9° C to -6.6° C)
USDA Zone 9b (-1.2° C to -3.8° C)
USDA Zone 10a (1.6° C to -1.1° C)
USDA Zone 10b (4.4° C to 1.7° C)
USDA Zone 11 (above 4.5° C)
Our winter temperature rarely if ever falls below -1 C, although we do get 3 or 4 frosts each winter.
The hardiness of Livistona australis was added by palmbob, who is very knowledgeable on palm trees and knows a lot about their cultivation in USA.
