The seed is encapsulated in the "body" of the butterfly shaped seed pod shown here. I use both thumbnails to break apart the "body". Then, I roll the seed between my thumb and forefinger. If it crumbles, it is an old seed or insects have borrowed inside of it. If it does not crumble, it is viable. (San Antonio, Tx.)
I am interested in butterfly vines from an atrist's view point. This picure obviously reflects several petals, other pics appear to have only 2/3. Are there different variations? Also, do you have additional photograhs? Thanks
I believe that there are 4 "wings" on the seedpod ...2 on each side plus a small structure originating near the middle that sticks up. In some photos, it seems as though there are only 2 or 3 depending upon the angle from which the photo was taken and how far the "wings" have spread apart. I have destroyed the seedpods that I had collected to remove the seeds. I will try to find some seedpods and will send you some as this would be the best way for you to observe the architecture of the seedpods.
