These are wonderful marigolds. The lacy leaves are lemon-scented, and there is a profusion of bright, lemon yellow blooms. The signet marigolds are some of my favorites. I've also grown Red Gem, Lulu, and Tangerine Gem.
I love these, too! The butterflies like them, and they do very well in beds or containers. I like to plant them next to salvia "Black and Blue" for the color contrast.
I've seen the tangerine gem variety, but not the red or lulu varieties.
The blooms are edible, are they not?

Hi, Pat. I think signet marigolds are the only ones recommended for consumption. Their wonderful fragrance is what draws me most, though the fernlike foliage is attractive, as well. The red variety I grew was from seed labeled 'Red Gem', though I think the same type is sold as 'Paprika'. Salvias don't care for our wet, cool summers, but I'm sure that mix would be lovely!
I have a friend in AK who said the joke for summer of 2008 was that it was "one of the mildest winters we've ever had." LOL
I've used both the lemon gem flowers and violas frozen in small molds to make fancy ice cubes for parties-- very pretty use of something that will need to be plucked anyhow.

Thanks, Pat. We could sure use a good summer. The last two have hovered around 50 degrees, but not as much rain, so we watered with hats and gloves to keep warm! I've never used petals in ice cubes, but it must be festive.
