Honestly...it really thrives on neglect. It is in a 6" diameter by 4" high bowl, filled with river stones and kept full of water. I add water every other day or so, depending on the ambient humidity. It is in indirect light on a kitchen counter. I fed it a little Miracle Grow last Winter (6 months ago). I have never trimmed or pruned it. The leaf tips are a little brown, but other than that it appears to be very happy in its spot. Hope this is helpful :)

Mine looks just like that. I also have mine on the kitchen counter. It is close to the over the kitchen sink flourescant light that remains on all the time and it also gets indirect light from the window. I water it when the pebbles no longer show water at the top where I can see it. I occasionally give it Miracle Grow when I think about it. I have wanted to start new ones but haven't had the courage to cut on the canes since the are doing so well for me.

Thanks for letting us know that. Has anyone else had this to happen? How in the world does one aquire more rather than just winding up with the new one and losing the other? I have hesitated to cut mine for that very reason but they are getting too tall.

I just returned from the Gulf Coast of Florida where you can find rooted cuttings of these everywhere. They are just grouped in buckets of water. So, I would imagine that they must not be too difficult to root under the right conditions. I also just noticed that my plant has produced a "pup" :)

That is wierd! I might just put mine in a bigger container if they do start pups. I suspect that is the way to go with getting more of them started. I am still looking at mine wondering how to cut them to keep from losing the original one.

Sorry, I can't help on how to cut them, but how do you get them growing with the corskscrew effect. When I asked someone who was selling them, she said that was an international trade secret! So I'm none the wiser...

I recieved my lucky bamboo around Christmas time, and i just left it in the pot ( a small 6 inch shallow bowl). There was about 40 shoots clumped together. After it seeing barely grow, i took the 5 largest shoot(around 6inches tall) and planted them in some sterile potting mix. They have shoots twice as tall as the shoots that are still in the original container, which is about 7 inches of new growth now. I also cut off all the rubber bands and ties that kept them together in the original container. I think they liked that, but they are now kind of diagonal. I haven't really every fertilized them either. Good luck with all your bamboo plants.

When you plants grew did only the leaves get bigger, or did the body/ stalks grow as well?
