Tenaza, Apes-Earring, Huajillo, Guajillo, Mimosa bush Havardia pallens
The tenaza seed pods change colors as they mature. They are iridescent, even the reddish-brown ones, and appear is if they could glow in the dark. These beautiful pods are the reason that the plant is sometimes called "Apes-Earring". (San Antonio, Tx.)
They are from 4 to 6 inches long and really stand out on the plant which has small delicate foliage. I just love these pods especially when they are at their peak of color. In fact, I think that they are the most beautiful that I have ever seen. They glisten I even had to tone the photo down some because the colors are so vivid that they just don't look real. Now the colors have started to fade as the seed pod matures. As it dries, the pod twists, pops open and disperses the seeds. The empty pod is then left in several thinner cylindrical shapes that are twisted. Some resemble loosely curled strands of brownish hair. Here is one of the photos full size so you can see the colors better. Thanks for your comments.
