Alpinia zerumbet has thick and leathery leaves. In the typical variety they are completely green and in the variegata cultivar, leaves have yellowish-white bands and stripes, which are very ornamental.
Vigorous, rhizomatous herbs, in clumps, of China and Japan, 2-3m high, with numerous arched stems.
