Clare: I believe this pictured tree to be Michelia Crassipes (which is what I purchased it as). I have a Crassipes and the Chapensis. Here is a link to the website from which I draw this conclusion.
Hi Joyce, I don't agree, but I understand your confusion. Magnolia figo var. crassipes is more of a shrub with much smaller leaves. The tree, Michelia chapensis, now Magnolia chapensis, has large leathery and dark green leaves and is somewhat rare still in the United States. I believe my tree was labeled correctly. Also, the leaves in your link look very different to me. I think the tree in that link has been mislabeled. It looks more like Magnolia champaca to me, but it's hard to tell since it is so young.
