I live in Austin and was wondering>
1) How long did it take for this plant to muliply to this size
2)Do you need more than one plant to get it to produce seeds
3) Do you cut it back hardy in the fall or winter
4) What plant do you compare it to
5) What looks nice planted with this plant-I notice you have Lantana next to it
6)Are there other colors that you know of
7) I am really enjoying other plants that I have planted this season- but I noticed everything is blooming alot more this year, than last year and I was wondering if the large amount of rain we had this Winter had a dealing with it? Can this plant be hurt by to much rain or water
8)So full sun is ideal for this plant? Is yours in full sun
9)Do you dead head it
10)Any info that I have not asked about would be so helpful
Thank you so much, It would be nice to to discuse other plants that you have growing... Currently I have purchased two Rose of Sharrons- I am not sure that the variety I chose was the one I wanted.I wanted to get the huge double layered purplish- fushia flowers, not for sure the name.If you ever see something like that, letting me know would be so great-S.A. is only a hour away..I drive there all the time,Would love the excuse of being able to stop in the nurserys there.Other wise try to limit myself , very addicted to the plant world, cant go any where with out purchasing somethhing. By the way where do you shop- i have noticed a garden center I always want to stop into ,by 1604,not for sure the name and it is so sad that Calloways closed all over S.A. Thanks again...Hope you get this message.

Hi,
This plant is growing in someone else's yard and I have never has one myself. However, I can answer some of the questions that you have asked.

I. I think that the plant shown is about 3 years old.
2.You do not need more than one plant to produce seeds.
3. It can be pruned anytime in order to keep its shape; but if it freezes, cut it to ground level at the end of winter. It should come back up from the roots in your Zone if you have mulched it heavily during the winter.
4. It is similar to many plants suitable for xeriscaping and is a butterfly attractor.
5. A great lantana that would compliment the bloom color is gold lantana 'New Gold':

or the one picturted which provides a great contrast is the purple triling lantana:
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/2042/index.html
The purple one grows lower than the 'New Gold.
A taller companion plant that requires little water and would compliment the bloom color is Butterfly Weed
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/604/index.html
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/53105/index.html
And one that grows about as tall
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/73/index.html

6. This is the only color of bloom that I have seen in person, but there is a different species, the wild form (Leonotis leonurus), that has white blooms or the same colors as you see on the Leonotis menthifolia which is which grows 6 feet tall and 4.5 feet wide, but the bloom is larger and somewhat of a different shape.

7. The winter rains helped all of my plants too. This plant, once established requires little water and that is why a good companion plant would be the lantana which requires little water as well. It can tolerate more water, but the soil must be well drained or it could develop root problems. It tolerates poor soil as well.
8. It requires full sun for at least most of the day in order to have the most blooms and not become "leggy".
9. It reseeds freely, so if you don't want lot of baby plants, it needs to be deadheaded after blooming.

I have some Rose of Sharon cuttings that I am trying to root. I would be happy to send you one of each when they become larger (hopefully) if you want any of these 3:

I do most of my plant buying at Rainbow Gardens. There are 3 of these nurseries in San Antonio.

Hope the information has been helpful,
Hazel

Thank you Hazel,
The excitement to see that you replied is very high.I appreciate the answers you have given me. I am not a many years experienced gardener ,but just the past few years I have enjoyed.I might pick that up from my Grandmother. She is a master gardener in N.C. and knows quite a bit,she doesnt have a computer so it is really hard to get information. This web site I just stumbled onto and it has been the best one so far.I really like being able to post and discuss .Yes ,it would be a delight to recieve these beautiful Rose of Sharrons( what do you feed them?) they are absolutely beautiful. Maybe at the end of the season I can share with you some cuttings from a Trumpet Flower that I recieved as cuttings also. The pictures you post are so nice ...Thank you so much. Its nice to chat about this with someone who shares the same intrest..my husband has told me my yard is beautiful, but he doesnt like just looking at them-the way that i like to. Because I study them- to him they are nice.

And yes your answers have been very helpful,
Alicia

Welcome and its great that you have joined our family here at Dave's Garden. I am glad you stumbled upon this website. You will find that you will be able to ask a lot of questions if need be and receive answers from lots of helpful and friendly people here.

I have found that I have not had to fertilize my Rose of Sharon at all. I will send you an email when they are ready. I am happy that you enjoy my photos. My husband is the same way, but he has become more interested in them after he had to water them when I was recovering from surgery last summer. I am glad that I could be helpful to you.
