We have a lot of this in S. Florida, but I've never heard anyone accuse it of killing anything. The question is, is this growing on a branch it killed, or is it growing better on a dead branch, a branch that died from other causes?

The consensus of gardeners I've talked to here seems to be the branch died first.

Nope, the branches are not already dead. The ball moss is so thick that it keeps the light from reaching the leaves and the lower inside branches die. This goes for crepe myrtles and live oaks as well as other types of oaks. When I had the trees demossed and sprayed, not one branch large or small died until the ball moss covered them again which took a few years. I just don't have the money to have it done and I can't climb up into the oaks. The tops of the oaks that received sunlight are fine. The tips of the large branches have leaves. I have oak tries behind me covered in ball moss so every few years they need resprayed. My crepe myrtles are losing limbs now that the moss is covering them. When I have time, I will see if I can take some photos to show you what I talking about. Its not just my trees either. Maybe it is just a South Texas problem. Thanks for you comments, I appreciate your taking the time to write.
