Have you any idea where a Katsura tree can be purchased?
I saw a very old tree on Long Island at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum, and it seems to flourish well in this latitude.
I plan to purchase a Cercidiphyllum japonicum for my property
if I can find a seller. Meanwhile, I went back to the tree in the Arboretum and picked up a leaf from the ground which had a flower attached, brought it home, and printed a botanical print using Photoshop. This is the result:
I was able to buy a 5 ft tree in San Fran region for $125. Unfortunatley won't help you in NY. I used to live in Westbury and am familiar with your stomping grounds.
I saw 5 foot Katsuras for sale at Arrowhead Alpines in Fowlerville, MI May 5, 2004 for $29.00. I know that they ship, but I don't know if they ship very large things. Their website is http://www.arrowhead-alpines.com/
I bought a small one three years ago from ForestFarm, http://www.forestfarm.com/ and it has done very well. The price was good. The tree was healthy, and it is now over 6-feet tall. If you have patience and/or time, that is an option!
I was looking for pictures for a Katsura and thought is was funny looking back at some of the comments here on price. I'm from the Milwaukee, WI area and found one nursery that sold these. I purchased an 8ft multi-stem for $480, and then it ended up being $290 after 40% since the nursery sold the land that it was planted on.
I also found a 8ft single stem Autumn Gold Ginkgo for $359.00. Its the first one I have even seen with a rounded branching structure. Pretty excited to get a few "interesting" trees in my landscape.
