I have friends out in Oceanside, CA, who planted a lemon tree in their garden to commemorate the life of a beloved son who died last year. I know nothing about western gardening, and could only observe, during a recent visit, but it seems their lemon tree is not very healthy. It's about 3' tall, planted last year. on a gentle slope. It gets plenty of sun. Water for the garden is on a timer, and this desert garden gets water twice a week. The leaves are mostly yellow, although this struggling little tree seems to have fruited heavily. The lemons are small but sweet and delicious. I suggested they have the Ph of the soil tested to see what amendments, if any, need to be made. The soil seems largely made up of a light gray (almost white) clay and sand. There appear to be quite a few worms, not as fat and long as ours here in the NE, but skinny and energetic. The rest of the garden, with its flowers and succulents, cacti, agaves, aloes and flowering vines seem to be doing well.

I'm just looking for some help for my friends from someone who really knows about lemon trees.
Thanks.

The growing conditions vary widely from zone to zone.

But you are right about your suggestion. They really need to take the soil and few leaves to the County Agricultural Extension Agent or to a nursery to identify the problems.
