Please pardon my ignorance as a new garderner, but is the same thing as "hens & chicks". I have those, but these are much prettier. Do you know where might I purchase some? I'm in Seattle, Washington.
I grow the G. 'Point Dexter's' in the ground and in my greenhouse (just in case we have a severe winter like in 90-91). It is a strong and beautiful plant, not as brittle as some. It is often found in the cactus/succulent section of nurseries (even at places like Home Depot), but is quite often passed over because they don't seem to travel well...they can look pretty shabby, but quickly perk up with a little TLC.
Sempervivum are much stronger plants for shipping, don't damage as easily and also multiply quickly. Some are hardy, some not so hardy. Check the Plants Database here on Dave's for some culture requirements...or try them inside with quick draining soil and LOTS of bright sunlight. Just offhand my only concern with Seattle would be the soggy winters, but that may be a misconception on my part. :-)
Here's my Sempervivum (and some other relatives) "nursery":
I just noticed that you are a new member of Dave's and I'd like to welcome you, it's an awesome resource...so much valuable and unique information to be found in the Plants Database and on the Forums.
