Spotted Dead Nettle 'Beacon Silver'
Lamium maculatum
Additional info: (aka Silver Beacon)

April 2004. Almost did not notice this blooming; it grows under a large bleeding heart.

Great photo of the bloom and the wonderful foliage. I have planted this plant several times in the ground and in containers and it eventually dies. I don't know what I am doing wrong.

I have not grown this plant for long; a friend gave me a piece last spring. It wintered well, and I have already dug some out and shared it with others. So I don't really know the problems it may encounter. However, it obviously like moist shade and maybe it prefers the cooler temps here. It gets a chance to rest in the winter here in the colder zones, even though it does not lose it's leaves. A southern gardener told me once that many hostas would not grow there because they just "grew themselves to death" and needed a rest period. Maybe this is similar...just guessing, of course.

We bought some Lamium maculatum 'Beacon Silver' three years ago. We bought 3 plants and planted them about 2 feet apart. They were slow to spread but after 2 years were almost grown together. We just noticed today (the 3rd year now)that there are all sorts of tiny starts from the plant all over the garden, which is what we wanted. The garden is small and secluded and the 'Beacon Silver' shouldn't be able to take over too much. We were very happy to see that the plant has finally spread and should soon cover the whole area, like we wanted three years ago. I suppose if we wanted a quicker form of action, we could have bought more plants, but this should work. We will see.
