My grandmother had the biennial variety that she gave my mother and was passed to me. The first year plant is no more than a 1-2 " tall single stemmed tuft and looks like a weed. Care must be taken not to mistake it and pull it out. In Northwest Colorado, the second year plant will shoot up from the evergreen 1st year plant. Our winter temps even dip to -30 F and sometimes down to -40 F. I lay down seed in the Fall and Spring, so I don't know which is actually taking. the seed is unique 3D shaped triangle.
