This flower is doing well in a ditch in full sun. We have some with larger flowers that grow in near full shade. The color is richer in the shade growth.
This looks exactly like, Schrankia microphylla, a naive here in the southern US. It is moderately to densely prickly & is found throughout in open fields & roadsides. I have read that the quaint curling of the leaves when brushed against are a protection from herbivores.
You may well be right. This plant usually lies flat on the ground, and has a lot of thorns. The flowers are also very similar. Do you have a picture of a seed pod? That should make an ID easier.
