Ladyannne - what time of the year does your chasmanthe bloom? I planted some a few years ago and I get one or two scraggly blooms late fall. I am in zone 9 also - not sure if 9a or 9b. Yours look a lot healthier than mines!!
Ours must be over twenty years old, and extremely invasive until I started chopping off the seeds. They are in a great deal of shade and bloom right at the beginning of the year, Feb or March? One of the first to bloom, which is great for the hummers as there is not alot of natural hummer flowers at that time and this appears to be a mainstay for them. Right now they are completely dried and dead (the tops) and I have not gotten around to removing to leaves. Too hot anyway to be outside.
I am totally surprised these bloomed in the fall. No offense intended, are you sure they are the same? There is a larger picture of the flower somewhere ...http://plantsdatabase.com/go/54491/index.html.
Let me know, I can cheerfully send you seeds. Many.
