Elephant's Ear 'Polly'
Alocasia amazonica

Wonderful waxy, stiff leaves

Bought one of these from a street vendor in Brooklyn, NY earlier this summer. Transplanted it to a pot on my front stoop. A Florida friend recommended full sun. Some of the older leaves are dying off. Not sure whether its just transplant shock or displeasure with new conditions. Any suggestions?

I sure wouldn't recommend full sun. Most of these tropical Alocasias seem to like partial if not full shade, though perhaps in a tropical environment could handle some full sun (along with a lot of rain). Out here in So Cal putting this species in full sun without some sort of misting apparatus would be certain death... even in 50% shade cloth mine get burnt a bit.

They don't like full sun. I lost one that way. I keep mine in the shade they like lots of light.
