All Datura species and hybrids are self fertile. That mean, pollen applied to the stigma on the same flower or another flower on the same plant result in the forming of a seedpod with viable seeds. Some Datura set pods readily. Other does not all the time, but why can that be?
To form a seedpod pollen must travel from anther to stigma, where the pollen grains germinate and grow down towards the ovary where they fertilizes each individual egg and each fertilized egg becomes a seed. In some Datura species these processes however, fails. The explanation why they fail is simple and has everything to do with the position of the stigma in relation to the anthers.
Here first a chart showing what all these unfamiliar terms in fact means :)
