Well, the weekday farmers' markets are slowing down and this Tuesday will be my last Tuesday. I actually get a bit of a break, yippee. :( Saturdays are slowing down, but only because we are sort of in between summer and fall crops. Not sure how long or good our fall crops will hold up as we've not had rain and not been able to plant.
We did plant strawberries (or tried to) a few weeks ago. We ordered 2000 plants from Jung's and the Fed Ex delivery person dropped them in the middle of our driveway while we were at the market on a Saturday!!! It just so happened to be close to 100 degrees that day. The plants were a mess (not Jungs' fault) and most were moldy and rotten. We sifted through them and planted what we thought would make it and they have all died. I called Jungs and they are sending us replacements. Although they've run out of the everbearers they will send us some of those in the Spring. I told her I have a sign (actually 2) on a building coming down the driveway that all deliveries are to made in there, it says Fed Ex, UPS, Post Office, etc. and they never listen to us. I had her put specific instructions on the instructions part of their slip.
So, hopefully rain will hold off here again so that we may plant new plants. Wondering now, of course, when they will come. With my luck, it will be this week and what a week I have planned!
Ralph had a chef friend of ours at Smoketown market this weekend. We prepped chopping peppers, onions, tomatoes for a long time on Friday in anticipation of a big crowd, supposedly this was highly advertised (?) by the board!!! Well, 14 omelets were sold and one sausage sandwich! I was thoroughly disgusted. 'Several tour groups' turned out to be one, with media, government, and other officials on board. No one bought anything and wanted to know what they could do to help the market move along. I think Ralph laughed at them and said, "We need some community support, not from just the consumers but from them!!!" Next week, he is planning to sell at the Bardstown Road market, so Gary (VGMKY) stop by if you can and say hello. :) Hopefully it will be a bit better than this show.
Well, busy day again today...hope it is sunny and bright in your neck of the woods. All my DG friends in the south, you've been in my prayers daily and continue to be.
Happy Day,
Kathy
