Here is an image showing the unusual features and colors of banana flowers. The leathery covering is dirty purple on the outside and red on the underside. The small parts that become bananas are revealed starting at the top of the bunch when the coverings curl back one by one. At a certain point bananas no longer develop but the flowers continue to appear for some time. The flower stem should be cut off just below the last "hand" of little bananas so that the plant wastes no nourishment on nondeveloping fruit.
