Melody:
What kind of soil condition do they prefer? I just planted a tiny one today (about 24" high), watered it in (in an area that will drain well), and we get lots of rain through the Fall and Winter (Washington State). But I'm wondering about the summer. Are they very picky? How fast do they grow?
Thanks

These are native trees to our area and populate the forests and fencerows all over. We have neutral to slightly acidic soil...only slightly acidic.

For the most part, these trees grow well in most conditions here. We have long, hot, humid summers. Wet springs and dry to damp fall.

I suppose they grow at a pretty good rate...not like a poplar or sycamore...they are more of a hardwood tree...but as there are many of these trees in all stages of development in our neighborhood...and I've never seen one offered for sale (we just go and dig one up) I can't help on the rate of growth.

They are a pretty forgiving tree with few pests...and we have every pest known to man, plant and beast. They seem to live a long time and you don't see any diseased ones.

Thanks Carla,
This is one of my favorite trees. It's so easy to pick out this time of year because of the intense color.
