My grandmother planted some Lily of the Valley along the side of her house when it was built back in the late 1800's. When I was a child of 3 or 4 ( I am 57 now ) she would tell me how much she loved flowers and how she wanted to be surrounded by living flowers all of her life and not dying ones at her funeral. I remember when she was ill many people came by with more live plants to plant in the back "English garden". When my aunt went into a nursing home in 1989, I went over and dug up all of the Lily of the valley that I could find and transplanted them in my garden, they are spreading out quite nicely now and every time I see them I think of my 'Granny". I don't know if there are different types of Lily of the valley or not. They are pretty sad right now or I would post a picture, I will take some nice shots in the spring. My daughter carried a few of them in her bridal boquet. I guess they would be considered heirloom, right?
