I voted for the gift certificate because unless I really know the recipient, or they really know me, the chances of giving a gift of something they/I already have, that's the wrong color/size/weight etc. are huge. As long as it is a reputable firm, almost any of the great chioces listed could be purchased there - possibly even the strong back for a short time 8-)

Gift certificates - by far and large are the best choice! You know what a person has - but you don't know what they don't want.

I need the help more than anything.

My dream has been to have a housekeeper so I could spend all my time gardening, a cook because I am tired of cooking, a full time handyman(carpenter, plumbing, garden help, etc.) and a fully outfitted big green house for my zone. (All paid for by someone else)

I don't want much...LOL

I said gift certificate because I would LOVE a gift certificate to Mesa Gardens or Glasshouse Works and because half the fun is getting to choose the plants that look like the most fun. :)

I chose Arbor, Trellis, Fountain etc. Because I thought maybe a Greenhouse would fall in that category. But really all the gift items were pretty HOT. I'm not a picky person I would enjoy them ALL.

This was a really hard one for me. I personally wouldn't choose receiving plants or bulbs as an ultimate garden gift as it could easily turn out to be a plant I really don't like...then what am I gonna do? But if someone gives me a pretty (but empty) pot, a trellis, an arbor, gloves, tools, etc...those I can use and be really happy with without having to display a plant I don't like just to keep from hurting someone else's feelings. If someone gave me an arbor or trellis I'd be soooo happy! My FIL gave us some really gorgeous pots when we first moved in here as a house warming gift. My DH said later he didn't understand why his father didn't just go ahead and buy some plants to put in them. He didn't think his father was being cheap...just didn't get it. I told him that his father understood me far better LOL. Also, garden tools would always be welcome...even if you already have a rake, they eventually need replacing, so I would love to get new tools. The only other thing on the list I wouldn't like would be the manual labor. Unless of course it was someone hired to help me build a pergola LOL.

Hmmm... loaded question - it would depend on the gardener and the purchaser. Different gardeners may need or want different things. One gardener may have plenty or tools, but might like a new trellis and the other way around. Also - aside from my online friends - none of my "local" friends are gardeners (save one), and know little to nothing about it. They wouldn't know what to buy me. I'd prefer them get me a gift certificate to somewhere than to buy me something I can or won't use. However, my "online" friends, it's quite the opposite. From prior posts or conversations, they might know that this tool of mine recently broke or is old or that I really love "these" kinds of plants.

I voted other, more than one good choice makes me overstimulated and can't concentrate to choose. I also voted other on winter gardening prep, favorite summer memory, can you see the pattern developing? Dear Dave or Terry, can I give this long distance dedication request for all the above as an answer? What was the question again? Oh yes, I didn't see composter on there, got one for my bday this year and its the best gift I've received to date. P.S., my bday wan't listed over there --->, on the side panel, thats a whole other issue. I also could of said instead of physical labor help, some design help, landscaping planning.

someradiantpig, if we gave "all of the above" as a choice, fewer people would talk about their answer, which is the point of the pollbooth. (There's nothing scientific about the poll and we don't spend a lot of time analyzing the responses ;o)

I'm with Mvespa, I was looking for the choice that said "All of the Above". I try very hard not to look at my checkbook and add up all the cost of all the gardening related items I've blown the kids' inheritance on, and springtime is the WORST. But if I were limited to just one choice, I would have to ask for a greenhouse, a real greenhouse, not those cheesey tent things (no offense intended) but one with glass and ventilation and heat and water and ...sigh. Santa isn't going to bring me one is he? Maybe next year.

I voted, "OTHER" but what I really meant was

ANY OF THE ABOVE!!!

gimmee gimmee gimmee!

Two or three years ago, my DH gave me a Suncrest (I think that's the brand) all UV-resistant 'plastic' (resin? who knows) potting bench. I hadn't even asked for it! It is real nice, sturdy, AND has *helped* me keep most of the little items corral'd to one place. It's outside, so only things that can stand being in the weather are on/in it permanently, but at least it gives me a first place to look!

Haven't had a chance to read all the previous entries, I truthfully am not hoping for anything for the garden -- I asked for TIME! hard to find a source to buy it! ...maybe a promisory note for a "hired boy" (a day's labor) for next spring...

I voted other. Subscription to a gardening club or society is something I like, most of the time you get several magazines on a particular type of plant or gardening, a chance to go to meetings and shows, chance to contribute and receive seeds and sometimes plants as well as a lot of information such as book lists, trips, lectures that you might not get to hear about normally.

Other than that a day or 3 at a big public garden like Kew with likeminded company would be good too.

I have gone for 'other'.

In my opinion, the best gift for a gardener is the space for a garden [also to keep sufficient pots] and the inclination/will to have one. Without that, I think whatever materialistic thing would be meaningless.

I voted other, too. Not because it's "all of the above" as so many have stated, but because what I really want is TIME!

What I mean by that is that the week is just too short to fit in all the cooking, cleaning, yard work and outdoor activities, and gardening.

But boy oh boy it would be great if the week had just 2 more days in it!

I live less than 70 miles from Kew, it's close to Hampton Court (RHS holds shows there) and Wisley. Of all the three, I've only been to Wisley which has a very good horticultural library that I must go and use at some point. At the rate I'm dragging my heels you will get to Kew far quicker than I will, your husband will certainly risk jetlag coming this way, I'm just put off by there being no car parking at Kew *G*

I must go at least once and soon, Orchid time!!!

Easy to please any gift is special but the one I like best is when people come and share my garden and flowers. Especially when they have never see a veggie any place other than the table or the store.

Watching young brides to be and their friends and mothers picking flowers for their soon to happen weddings is fun to. These are slowing down now as most of the young people we know have gone through that process we only did one last year.Ernie

I voted for the gift certificate too. Because of the uncertainty of "knowing" what's in the recipients garden shed, garage, etc., you never know if it's an original gift! Although I like the idea of manual labor with the extra heavy stuff, I enjoy doing most of it myself. And besides, with a gift certificate I would be able to spend some of my budget on extras!
