| Ours is a Calendar House. We have calendars in bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, etc. I chose my favourite pet or animal - which is cats - because the majority of the caledars are cats. However, we have two theme bathrooms - fish and frogs, so we also have a frog calendar and a dolphin calendar. In the kitchen, however, is a calendar from a local florist and has lovely flowers on it for each month; our local newspaper gives away a milk calendar in December so that's also in the kitchen. January's is a daylily. We also have a calendar that friends put together of their favourite photos each year, and we have that one in our den. |

| Ours is a calendar house too! My mom always gets me the Canadian Church Calendar for Christmas; it's hanging up by our phone. One year they'll have pictures of churches across Canada on the big picture for each month, and small pictures of flowers on the lower half of the page - then the next year they alternate, and have big flower pictures with thumbnail church pictures on the lower half.
My favourites are the small rural churches...they're so humble, and beautiful; an important part of our country's cultural and architectural heritage. Even though it doesn't happen to be my religion, I always like getting this calendar.
My 2nd-favourite is an Inuit art calendar that we get each year...beautiful!
Happy New Year to everyone,

| Freebies are cool...we get one every year from our home-tending/plant-watering/kitty-feeding person, when we go away for the holidays. It's a nice calendar, all on one page for easy ref. Some gas stations have good ones too, and credit unions. We like to cut off the advertising part that sticks out from the bottom, if possible :-) |

| The local SPCAs make some good ones, for fundraisers. In Edmonton they chose one animal for each month from a photo contest, but in Yellowknife they plastered each month with a collage of animal photos - I think they got every photo that had been submitted in the whole city, into the calendar! It was fun to look at. |

A friend gave us a calendar with the tides on it because she knows we like to go walk on the beach when it is low. Very thoughtful
Second is a sailing calendar my DH 's brother sends him from England each year.
And third is one from a British charity my m-i-l used to send every year. It has pictures of local scenes (Bolton) by an artist that are also postcards. My s-i-l keeps up the tradition now that mum is gone.
Next year I hope to make my own with old family photos -- just for the family.

The one on my palm is pictures of my grandkids.
The one downstairs is of cats. The dog got left out this year, last year is was daschunds.

| At Christmastime about 10 years ago, my dad gave everyone in the family their own personalized calendar made from family photos that he had - like the ones you can do yourself now, but he got it done at a printer's which I think was the only way, at that time. It has some wonderful photos, such as of my grandmother in her healthier days, and my grandfather who had passed away a few years earlier. I still look at it from time to time. I highly recommend DIY calendars, for those who have the means - it's a wonderful keepsake.

The only things that won't line up are holidays based on the lunar position, and holidays that aren't aligned with our dates of the year, such as Jewish holy days. The rest will work out perfectly...even with leap years!

This makes me think of something funny I saw yesterday. I was at my favorite nursery in Dallas and in a corner they had a calendar put out by the FIRST MEN's GARDEN CLUB (all Dallas residents). It's a spoof on the movie Calendar Girls and all the guys are naked but cleverly covered by garden tools, plants, etc. They are $15 and proceeds go to scholarships. When I was working, I used to put up five calendars at work because I had so many. I would have one set at the current month, one at two months back, one at one month back, one at one month ahead, and one at two months ahead. |

| I picked 'Other,' because I have so many different types.
A 'Religious/spiritual' that one is in my bedroom.
I also have one for 'Favorite artist or artwork (who?)' - Norman Rockwell; in the kitchen.
One in my living room; a beautiful one based on my 'Unicorn' theme.
One that is 'Gardening or flower-themed' with an 'Almanac' included.
And I also have one that is a book/desk type 'Flower Themed' that is for Birthday's, Anniversaries, Special Rememberance days, Doctor appointments etc. on my computer desk. A pen & pencil back-up for when my computer gives me a hard-way to go.
So I won't actually lose my mind, I'll just feel that way!

It brightens my day to see pretty pictures of things I love.
I usually get these 2 ...
"Out on The Porch"
The literary equivalent of an afternoon in a fav rocking chair
viewing spectacular vistas from wonderful porches.
"The Secret Garden"(Smith & Hawken)
...some are grand - centuries in the making - and others are casual ; a pond surrounded by flowers ,
a couple of chairs planted in a plot of wild flowers.
All provide a kind of sustenance to my daily life.

| For the last two years, I have had the "Lady Coddington's Pressed Fairies" calendar, although I just found the "Long Tom Grange" calendar, which is a "Calendar Girls" style calendar done with the Men of the Long Tom Grange. It is hilarious!
The Mayor of Junction City Oregon is doing a Ribbon Cutting with the HUGE bow obscuring the interesting bits. There is a man pruning bonsai, another pushing a wheelbarrow FULL of daffodils.
Two local doctors are standing behind X-rays of their pelvic sections, a rancher is astride his horse. The local deputy sherrif is wearing his hat, badge, tool belt, and "hiding" behind an entier box of donuts!
A tennis instructor, a fisherman, a runner.
An Oregon Ranger standing behind his rescue board with a caption, "Lions and tigers, I'm bare! Oh my!"
I local winery owner posing behind his 'best' vintages, a retired grass seed grower on his tractor.
As a bonus, we even got Jan and Feb 06, a retired hospital administrator with some blueprints, and a cowby wearing his Stetson, a lariat, and his shotgun.
The Cover is of all of the men alongside the road wearing an assortment of hats, ties, and holding suitcases and briefcases trying to 'thumb' a ride! The back cover has them facing the other direction, with the cases hiding their behinds!
This is a fabulous calendar, and I'm sorry I ran-on about it, but it raises money for their local schools, and I have a lot of respect for a bunch of aging men willing to do such a "silly" thing for a good cause.

| This year I have an Escher calendar that a friend gave me. She has a friend who has a large collection of original Escher prints. Way out of my league.
But last year I had my all-time favoite calendar and I hate to retire it. It was called Women of the African Ark. It had gorgeous photos by Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher of gorgeous African women from many cultures--Kenya, Namibia, Eritrea, Ghana, Niger, Togo and Ethiopia in their wonderful native attire. This varied from body paint to totally veiled splendor revealing only the eyes. Every day I looked at it and thought about how different our lives were, yet how similar. It was an exquisite jolt of reality. Thanks, spklatt, for letting me know when I can use it again. Click the image for an enlarged view.
