| Well, I looked it up too. I have my garden journal right here and I looked up Caraghana. I have a long, long hedge of it inside my white vinyl fence to dull the extreme reflection off of it. |

| Well I 'cheated" and looked it up, but a Papillon is a Butterfly dog - because of the ears - and pea flowers are similar so I had a half idea before I started. |

| Ah, mais oui, papillon is French for butterfly :)
I love the pea family too. Such a lovely family name, it conjures up a beautiful picture of little butterflies with their wings fluttering in the breeze |

| One thing that confuses me is the family name "Fabaceae" vs. "Papilionaceae".
Are they interchangeable? Is one newer or older?
I know plants.usda.gov uses the family name Fabaceae for the Pea/bean family.
Just wondering.

| The ongoing family question...ha ha haha...good luck to us all! :-) From what I can tell, Leguminosae was re-named to Fabaceae, and Papilionaceae is a sub-set of the Fabaceae family - specifically, the ones that have butterfly-shaped flowers. It partly depends on whether you follow the "lumpers" or the "splitters", in botanical schools of thought...some taxonomists like to categorize many similar plants together in larger families, and others prefer to separate them based on specific differences. |

my French told me butterfly - but my lack of awareness of butterfly-like flowers shot me out of the competition. I am a dinosaur, still loooking for Leguminoseae ... the name changers are not my friends! LOL |
