| Well, it would certainly depend on what they look like and how much they cost, but I'd definitely take a large (guessing 12-14?) and an extra large. If I totally love them, and the price is right, I'd have to add 4 mediums (guessing size 8-10?), and possibly childrens - depending on size options.
And - ALL THE WORLD LOVES A MUG - though it's not as good advertising 'cause it wouldn't get out and about much!

| How about measuring those tees and giving us the results, men's XL are usually way too big, women's L is usually too small. Just measure across the front, times two, and if you feel extra frisky, measure from neckline to hem. Think they are gonna shrink? Can we see what they look like? Or is that on another thread that I'm too lazy to hunt down?

I would prefer a pre-shrunk XXXL and am willing to pay extra to get it if possible. I know most of the pretty colors only go up to XXL, having been the Tshirt ordering person in the past, but a XXL is kinda tight on me in the front too. Too much "boobage" I guess (and maybe too much information??... )

| Patience, please ;o)
Dave is working on the graphics and negotiating prices on shirts and mugs. But in the meantime, he needs some idea of whether he needs to order a gross of each size they make, a half-gross (if they'll let him), or narrow it down to the most popular sizes. (I don't think he wants to wind up with dozens of leftover t-shirts if he can avoid it, and at the same time, the more we fine-tune the estimates, the better prices he can get ;o)
I, too vote for a terra-cotta or green-colored t-shirt; one for me (medium adult) and one for DD (small adult or a child's/youth size.)

If I had a Vote, I'd vote for the old logo.
Still waiting to hear about caps... NOT everything has to be ordered by the half-gross. PiranhaPat (not sure of the spelling) got us tees for a GARU, probably no more than 50 tees in assorted sizes. |

| This is great!
I don't tend to wear T-shirst myself but my DW and DD do! And would certainly give some as gifts! (Sure makes "present times" easy and I also know the gift will be well rec'd!)
We have 3 mugs...use mine every day; it's as much a part of my hand as my fingers are!
Tote bags would also go well here. Very useful and something that would be used regularly (and out in the public eye)!
Altho I tend to only wear our personal farm bizness hats I think folks would love to wear one with DG on it. (And if ya'll need a source of great quality hats to work with, holler. My "original" hat has been worn daily for 4 years now, has traveled to 3 DG Roundups, been washed in a washing machine numerous times, and still looks brand new.)
Hmmm...wonder if Dave should put together a "DG All-Round All-Purpose" gardener's package! "A DG T-shirt, DG mug, and a DG hat, all snuggled in together within a DG tote bag and delivered to your door!" :>) |

I'm the opposite of Darius, any t-shirt I wear in the garden has to be dark...otherwise it could never be worn again due to all the dirt stains all over it ROTFL! I'd also get a mug or 2...would be great to drink hot-cocoa or tea in the winter when my garden is pretending to be an outdoor shower floor ;-). Also, I think hats would be great! Could be terracotta with a green brim or green with a terracotta brim (the latter is my preference :-). If hats are available, I'd order 3 of those too. All depends on price and design though...

| If Dave hasn't pulled out his hair Trish probably has. These are good ideas, but:
a) this is not official ordering. This is the equivalent of being in a room and having someone say "All who would buy a [size] t-shirt please raise your hand so we can get a rough count of whether there's enough interest to proceed."
b) Let Dave start small and simple - one style t-shirt, one (maybe two) color(s), and limited sizes. He can't afford to carry a complete line of products that would please everyone with every color, every logo, every style and every item you'd like to have. Once he has information on the design, color, sizes and price of the shirts, you can decide whether to order or not. right now is the time to simply let him know if you are most likely interested in purchasing a shirt or mug.
(Please remember Dave and Trish carried mugs with them during a cross-country move the last time we offered them. The DG Cookbooks took a loooong time to sell, even though everyone was enthusiastic about the idea. I suspect that has a lot to do with why the lack of products since then ;o) |

Why not offer Daves Garden iron on transfers? Maybe in 2 sizes, big for totes or T's, and small for caps/visors or pockets on T's?

| The number I buy will depend on the style. If it's something my family would wear, I'd get a large for my husband, a small adult for my daughter (she could also wear a 14/16 kids), and an 8/10 kids for my son. As long as the neck line isn't too tight, I'd take a medium or large also.

I want the DG logo to be seen while I'm out & about. I would say 8 x 10 should do it .
I still think the idea that PudgyMudpies had for iron on tranfers is a dynamite idea !

| I think a transfer would be a great idea. One (or two) size(s) fits all, should be reasonably inexpensive (perhaps even unreasonably so) and could be put on any sort of shirt or tote the owner chooses. After all, it's the logo that's important, not the background. |

| Only thing is, quality control might be problematic if transfers were sold. Often they require special dye-setting and extra coddling in washing, which a silkscreened T-shirt does not. Also, if the transfer is not correctly applied, the buyer might have a very unsatisfactory result. |

| Dave-Trish-Terry --
Voted for an XL; then read (skimmed) the comments...
Assuming Dave is less interested in making a 100% mark-up on T-shirts than he is in NOT having a room full of un-bought products -- the person who came up with the idea of Iron-On transfers should get several of them FREE!
Don't know where you find the source for them, but I think you should have real high-quality transfers made up in several sizes -- like 2x2" for hats and babies' shirts/onesies, 5x5" (or maybe 6x6", I'm spacially challenged) for small totes and kids' shirts, 8 or 9 x the same for big kids, regular adults, and run-of-the-mill totes; and 12x12" (or larger?) for multi-X shirts and super-size, all-day-at-the-plant-fair totes, barbeque aprons, etc etc.
You know, you may even be able to find someone to make heat-and-water resistant transfers for hard/glazed surfaces... like the decals for shower-tiles... for mugs or ??? anyone's choice of what to DG-ize! Minimize postage, no breakage, -- Julie has it right there, as far as shipping!
Google "Cafe Press" -- don't know if they are producers of logo items, or only the website where they are available, but I remember I got the idea that they were making NO MINIMUM ORDER promotional materials feasible for small operations.
Maybe you could even have OLD and NEW logos (like 'Classic Coke'? -- 'Classic Dave's'!)

| I just voted to find out what was going on! I probably will order a shirt if reasonably priced and attractive to me, but the size will depend on whether the shirt is 100% cotton or 50% cotton/50% polyester. Transfers are definitely a good idea if the aim is to publicize DG...I think more would be sold and used.

| I guess the iron on transfer idea is good for folks who want to put the Dave's Garden logo on various things.
However, I would prefer silk screen on a high quality cotton t-shirt. I doubt I would buy any iron on transfers.
As long as we are throwing things out, here in "sunny" San Francisco, most of the year I wear sweat shirts over my tees. I would definitely buy a nice Champion or Russell Athletic crewneck sweat shirt with the Dave's Garden logo. |

| IRON-ONS, fabulous idea. Less inventory(in $), less overhead, stores well, ships well. Let everyone buy their own size, color, style and brand of shirt, OR you provide the most popular sizes of shirts, and sell the iron ons to those who has special preferences.
I would buy half dozen or so Iron-Ons. Thes can also easily be sold at roundups this year... |
Terry Murfreesboro, TN (Zone 7a)
 January 28, 2005 4:27 PM Post #1262529
| I think Gardenwife hit the nail on the head about the potential problems with iron-ons. Dave and I talked about them before rolling out this week's question. And after doing a bit of research, I learned the industry refers to them as heat-transfers, and most producers warn that a typical iron cannot get hot enough or cover enough area to achieve optimal results ;-(
But I agree that transfers would be nice for those whose sizes may not be feasble for Dave to order, and for other items (totes, hats, visors, different style shirts, etc. If we *do* proceed with transfers (totally Dave's call), it would probably be a good idea to locate a local t-shirt shop and see if they could heat-set the transfer for you, especially on a shirt that's going to be laundered a lot.
Focusing just on t-shirts, this is most definitely a "bell-curve" with just a few needing/wanting infant, youth, or adult small sizes, a few others on the opposite end of the spectrum, and the majority falling in the Medium to 2XL range. |
Sequee Carmel, NY (Zone 6b)
January 28, 2005 4:48 PM Post #1262550
| The biggest problem with heat-transfers is quality control. Some of us are not too "mechanically" inclined, and if the transfers are not placed properly, they wouldn't look too great. The "public" wouldn't know that they were transfers, and not sold by/produced by DG. It would look lik DG was not quality conscious and that would not be a good selling point!
(Sorry if this explantion is fuzzy - I hope it at least makes sense. My brain is severely addled from this cold/bronchitis.) |

| It's really hard to say...it will depend on whether the shirts are 100% cotton or if they are a cotton/poly blend. I'd like a medium in a cotton/poly blend and a large if 100% cotton.
Depending on the cost, I may take two shirts (and I'd like a coffee mug, too!)

| What about a patch instead of a iron on transfer? It's just a thought, but I've seen several like Ducks Unlimited & Taylor Guitars for instance. Still offer the good quality shirts with a logo (both DU and Taylor do), but a patch might work for those who want to embellish a tote, hat, or style/size shirt that isn't in the inventory. This would work for windbreakers, sweatshirts, overalls, nylon covered coolers and dog sweaters...you get the picture.
This would eliminate the quality problem for the transfers (and there would be one). Even people who are familiar with fabric and the process of doing this will not guarantee success 100% of the time...I wouldn't...and I deal with fabric and bonding things often. The heat has to be perfect...it won't stick on a brand new unwashed shirt...melts in the dryer.
An embroidered patch would be easy to ship, cheap, and one size fits all. It would be nice for our overseas friends too.
The transfer idea in itself is a good idea...but I think we would be better off if the medium used is different. |

At least that way it wouldn't matter what size you are. You can pick out your own shirt (or tote, or hat, or whatever) and just iron or sew the transfer/patch on it.

| So did you use an inkjet t-shirt transfer kit or have it done at a shop? |

| It looks very professional Margie. I don't think any one should be offended, it's not like you sold any. |

| Can I get what I need at my local fabric store? What is needed? Can I get it at an office supply store? Tell us more... |

| You can get transfer paper at an office supply store and print out a copy of gardenwife's wallpaper, with an at home ink jet printer. I have done that before. Actually what I did was a make it yourself shirt at CafePress. I mostly wanted to see how the shirt and transfer would hold up for another club logo, so decided to try it out with the DG logo. |

| I have a CafePress account, too. Hmmmmm...Ideas spinning in my brain now. Have you washed yours yet? I've wondered how their process holds up. |

| I have not washed it yet...actually like I said, that is why I ordered a shirt from them to see how it would hold up!
I will let you know when I find out. I have heard that they did well & they didn't send any special instructions with the tee like my local shirt shop does when I bring transfers to them to iron on for me. |

| Glad to hear there's no special instructions - that's a good sign! A local Columbus bookstore, The Book Loft, has t-shirts with their logo on them. They come with all these instructions about soaking them in vinegar water, washing them inside-out in cold water only, etc. I lost the instructions, so I need to e-mail them for a copy. I've not done the pre-treatment and therefore have been scared to even wear the shirt...And here it even gives me a discount off my purchase at the store if I wear it.

| We'd have to have 3XLT shirts and I'd want a couple for each of us so the patch is probably more cost effective for Dave. I only see one other person here who wants a really big shirt and he wants a 4XLT. That's not a lot of customers for the great big shirts. I also like the really heavy weight fabrics. That would make producing t-shirts for us pretty expensive. I'd love to buy the patches though! |

| A good sized patch that is embroidered would be great and would launder well. But I don't know how expensive they would be to manufacture. But if they are a possibility it would allow those of us that are bigger or smaller than the average person to be billboards for the greatest Garden site on the internet. And since obesity is supposed to be epidemic in this country I think you will find more than just 3 or 4 of us out here that would like this option. |
