I'm collecting open pollinated dent corns that were known to have historically done well in the Deep South and am looking for suggestions. Historically it seems most of these were of the white variety, but for reasons of my own I started with yellow dents. I've grown Truckers Favorite (yellow) before and will be planting it and Hickory King (yellow) this year.
I've got Boone County on my list along with Pencil Cob (both white). Southern Seed Legacy lists a Hastings white dent along with a Whatley's Prolific. Haven't yet written them to see about maybe getting a sample of the Whatley's yet. Can't find anyone listing that one anywhere. My dad remembers my grandfather (as a young man) and my great-grandfather growing an OP variety on the farm in Central Georgia that he seems to recall being called "Cherokee Chief" but I can't find even a reference to a corn by that name and he doesn't recall anything about it other than it being a dark yellow kernel with a reddish cap.
Anyone have other dent corn varieties to suggest and maybe a source of seed for them?
...Alan.
